Simontornya is a place (város) and municipality in the Hungarian county of Tolna. Simontornya has 4608 inhabitants (2001). Simontornya is centrally located in Hungary at the foot of the fledgling hills of the southern Mecsek Mountains and now has 4950 inhabitants. The city has its origins in the 4th century, which is evidenced by excavations from the Celtic and Roman times. The city is named after the residential tower (tornya) built and fortified by Salamon’s son Simon in 1280. One of the residents was Palatine Laslo Garai who, along with several other families, conspired against King Mathias. The then residential tower was converted into a Renaissance-style palace and was completed in 1509. The village is located at an intersection of roads, east to Danube, south to Pécs, west to the Adriatic and north to Vienna. The oldest maps show the village, destroyed by the Turks in the 1500s, but rebuilt over and over again. In 1728, the 1st stone was laid by order of Empress Maria Theresa for the construction of the beautiful Baroque church and monastery. The village of Ozora is 20 km from the vineyard, and a visit to the castle of Count Pipo Scolari is worthwhile. In Dég, just 12 km from Simontornya, is one of the most beautiful castles in Hungary. Built between 1810-20 by Count Festetics de Tolna, in the classic style with a beautiful English garden. On the island in the lake of the castle is the “Holland Házi”, which was originally the cowshed and later the great hall of the countess. In short, there is plenty to do in the immediate vicinity.
